No tests?? |
In some cases Nuria performs only a few or no tests at all. Possible reasons are:
a. The wrong subscription is chosen. It is absolutely necessary that you select the correct subscription from the subscription list. You can change this at any time: select "Setup subscription" from the Nuria menu and follow the instructions. In case your subscription is not listed, please contact us and we will add it (support@nuria.org.uk).
b. Firewall software is blocking the internet connection for Nuria. To solve this: allow Nuria.exe to access the internet in your firewall software.

Nuria says cpu or network load is too high.... |
Nuria checks cpu and network load before starting a test. These tests are done to make sure that Nuria does not influence your work/computer and makes sure that no tests are done when your internet connection is heavily used which would result in poor performance results.

Which information will be shown in my reports? |
Nuria measures different items. The download report gives the perception of the speed in which you can surf on the internet, download files (MP3 or software files, e.g.) or receive emails.
The surftest provides results about the speed websites can be visited.
The game-test provides results about the ping/respond time to different servers on the internet.
The upload-test results shows how fast data can be sent to the internet, for example: uploading photos to an online photo-store.

Why do I have to select my subscription in Nuria? |
After installing Nuria, you will be asked to fill out some details to complete the registration. One of these steps is selecting your subscription. We need this to correctly register the test results and to be able to give you reports and compare results to other subscriptions. If your subscription is not in the first (short)list, please select "Other". This will give you a complete list of all subscriptions in our database. If yours is still not in the list, please contact us (support@nuria.org.uk) and we will add it.

Are my details kept safe? |
Absolutely! Your information is kept safe and secured. No other users have access to your measurements.
Are the result reliable if I make heavy use of my internet connection? |
Yes. Nuria has built in intelligence that prevents measurements from being made during a heavy utilisation of the internet connection by the user. If your internet connection is used often and heavilly less measurements will be taken.
Do the measurements influence my internetconnection? |
There is hardly any influence. Nuria has built in intelligence that prevents measurements from being made during a heavy utilisation of the internet connection by the user.

Firewall ? Does Nuria work? |
If you are using a firewall, like ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security, etc., you will need to tell your firewall that Nuria has access to the internet connection. Most firewalls will ask you if you want to allow Nuria to access the internet.

How does Nuria measure? |
Nuria is aquiring download- game- upload- and surftests to several websites on the internet. Different files will be downloaded or uploaded. Nuria is logging the duration of the download or upload and how many bytes are downloaded. With these data the average speed will be calculated.
How much data/traffic does Nuria generate? |
To see how much traffic Nuria has generated with the tests, go to the Nuria Reports and go to the My Nuria section.

Nuria is (sometimes) not measuring?! |
Nuria is measuring a few automaticly generated tests an hour. When your computer is turned on periodicaly for a short term, a few tests can be performed. The Nuria speedtest reports overview is based on the results of the last 7 days. When your computer has been turned off for one week, no results will be available in the reports.
Nuria speedtest will disable measuring if your computer or internet connection is heavy in use to prevent overcapacity. By executing the measurings in the menu "Test now!" Nuria can announce there is not enough CPU- or networkcapacity to measure.
If this is not the case but you are still getting this message the following things could be the cause:
1. You did not select the right internet subscription. If you did not select the right subscription (right speed for your connection) Nuria will not perform any measurements in certain cases. Please check your subscription in the settings menu and correct if necessary.
2. The computer running Nuria is behind a firewall that does not allow ping or http traffic (from Nuria). Please authorize Nuria.exe to use your internet connection.
In all cases please try to manually initiate measurements. This can be done by clicking on the Nuria icon with the right mouse button and selecting "Test now!". In this window you will see if the measurements can be performed correctly. If this doesn't provide any information you can send a mail to support@nuria.org.uk. If you do please make sure you include your Nuria registration number in the E-mail. This can be found by "My Nuria".

What do you do with the measurements? |
The measurements are stored on the Nuria-server. From this server reports can be prepared concerning your own internetconnection. These reports also contain "benchmark" information of other users with similar subcriptions. This way you can judge how your internet performs against data of other similar products.

What does Nuria measure ? |
Nuria measures several things. When downloading the speed is checked required to download files. When surfing the time it takes to open popular sites is checked. For gaming speed information ping tests are done to several servers - responstime is being measured - this is an important criteria for playing games online. The upload test shows how fast information is sent to the internet. The area "satisfaction" gives you some insight in how other users judge your provider and subscription.

Why is Nuria freeware? Is it spyware? |
No, Nuria is no spyware.
Nuria is free for non commercial use. Of course it takes up a lot of resources to keep the Nuria system up and running, and keep improving it. Nuria is kept free for consumers through the unique collaboration of Iping Research (an independent research agency) the maker of Nuria, the consumer / user of Nuria and the ISP that is prepared to pay for the information that is provided by the measurements. This information is limited to performance data and will never contain any private information of the users! Nuria isn't spyware. Nuria does not register what users do with there internet connection; Nuria just makes some measurements (automatically or upon users request). This unique combination makes it possible to provide Nuria to users for free.

Help! My connection performs poorly - what can I do about it? |
The speed connected to the subscription you entered is a theoretical maximum. There are many factors that influence the actual speed amongst other things: the quality of your line, the distance to the telco's switch, the equipment used, the route taken over the internet and the capacity of the server on the other side which is used to test the performance.
You should also keep in mind that Nuria only measures bytes containing actual data. This means Nuria excludes the overhead on the connection. This overhead can be substantial and easily use up to 10% of your connection. If you have a connection of 1024kbit/sec only 900 kbit/sec is left after overhead.
Further more Firewall software (for instance Norten Internet Security, McAfee Firewall, ZoneAlarm etc.) can have a severe impact on the speed of your connection. This depends on how the software is configured and also how the software filters the data on your connection. These processes can slow down your connection substantially.
Your Windows settings can also influence the performance of your connection. There are many websites that can pefrom checks to see if your windows settings are optimal for instance Tweak tester:

How come there are only a few measurements? |
Nuria only performs a few measurements per hour automatically. This number is set so that your connection will not be used unnecesairily. After Nuria has been running for a few days enough measurements have been taken for a accurate result. Offcourse like in any other test: the more measurements, the more accurate and detailed the results! It is possible to increase the number of measurements taken : Click on the Nuria icon in the traybar with the right mouse button and "test now!".

The measurements of Nuria are taken from several different webservers located on different places in the world. Although the emphasis is on servers in the UK measurements are also taken from servers in the US and other countries. Especially during busy times international links can be heavilly loaded not allowing for the maximum speed of your connection to be reached.

What are Surf / Download / Game and Satisfaction measurements? |
Surf: During this test Nuria visits a number of popular websites and registers how long it takes for a page to load. The score is in seconds and a mark is calculated based upon this.
Download: During this test Nuria downloads a file and registers the time that this takes. The score is in killobit/sec and a mark is calculated based upon this (the measured speed divided by the maximum possible speed of your connection). The download tests are performed using several, fast servers in the UK.
Game: During this test pingtests are prformed to several servers in the UK. The score is in seconds and a mark is calculated from that.
Upload: During this test random data is sent to the server. The score is in killobit/sec and a mark is calculated based upon this (the measured speed divided by the maximum possible speed of your connection). The download tests are performed using several, fast servers in the UK.
Satisfaction: Here you can judge your own provider/subscription and see what other users think of this and similar subriptions.
What does benchmark mean? |
Next to the results of your own connection, you can see a benchmark value. This is the average of other measurements taken on subscriptions similar to yours. This way you can see if your connection is slower or faster than the averrage.
